Which fieldstone foundation repair fits the condition?
Fieldstone repair is not one operation. Deteriorated joints, water, loose stone, wall movement, and lost bearing lead to different scopes that may need to be combined.
Selective repointing
Remove deteriorated mortar without damaging sound stone or mortar, clean and prepare the joint, and place a compatible replacement mix and joint profile. The mix follows investigation, not a universal mortar label.
Water management
Correct documented roof, grade, drain, plumbing, condensation, or groundwater paths. Repointing and drainage can support each other, but one is not proof that the other has been completed.
Structural stabilization
Moving or bulging masonry, lost bearing, and damaged framing can require temporary support, an engineered wall or beam system, underpinning, or another defined load-transfer repair.
Partial or full rebuilding
Loose, displaced, failed, or inaccessible sections may require dismantling and reconstruction. The scope should state what is retained, reset, replaced, tied, supported, and documented.
Written scope
Six decisions the proposal should make visible.
Words such as repoint, parge, waterproof, and stabilize can hide very different work. The proposal should show the boundary between them.

Identify the wall assembly
Record dry-laid or mortared construction, rubble or cut stone, wall thickness where known, joints, wall core, footing evidence, and later concrete, block, brick, mortar, or coating work.

Map what stays and what leaves
Mark sound mortar, deteriorated joints, voids, loose or damaged stone, coatings, and the exact areas proposed for removal, resetting, repair, or rebuilding.

Specify compatible materials
Base the mortar and joint profile on the existing masonry, exposure, and investigation. A harder or denser mix is not automatically safer for older stonework.

Separate water from masonry work
State which roof, grade, drainage, groundwater, condensation, plumbing, coating, or interior water-control work is included and what remains outside the scope.

Define the structural responsibility
Identify bulging, displacement, lost bearing, framing distress, temporary support, engineering, underpinning, anchors, beams, columns, or rebuilding where applicable.

Set the field standard
Require a sample panel where useful, joint preparation and curing requirements, sequence, weather limits, photographs, inspections, cleanup, monitoring points, and written warranty terms.
Material boundary
Compatible mortar follows investigation.
National Park Service Preservation Brief 2 recommends retaining sound historic mortar, studying the existing material, and selecting replacement mortar that works with the masonry. A generic high-strength mix can shift stress or moisture behavior into the stone.
Movement boundary
New mortar cannot replace a lost load path.
Open joints with stable stone are different from a bulging wall, displaced masonry, failing footing, or framing that has lost bearing. Structural movement needs its own support and design record before cosmetic closure hides the evidence.
Safety boundary
Keep clear of unstable or falling masonry.
Restrict access when stone is actively falling, the wall is moving, framing has lost bearing, utilities are damaged, or collapse appears possible. Leave the affected area when immediate danger is present and contact emergency services or the appropriate building professional.

603 Basement Solutions publishes a customer account involving crumbling, settlement-related damage in an old fieldstone foundation and the installation of a lally column with repair of affected areas.
That is evidence of a contractor-published project, not independent proof that the same method fits another wall. The material and preservation framework above comes from Historic New England and the National Park Service.
