What does a bowing foundation wall mean?
A wall that curves, leans, bulges, or shifts inward has moved. The visible shape is important evidence, but it does not establish the cause or the repair by itself.
Lateral loading
Soil and water outside a below-grade wall create lateral loads. The wall design, soil conditions, drainage, and depth all affect the load path.
Wall construction
Poured concrete, concrete masonry, stone, brick, and altered assemblies do not behave or connect in the same way. The material and prior work need to be identified.
Support and restraint
The floor, footing, framing, and connections at the top and bottom affect how the wall is restrained. A visible curve does not show whether those connections remain sound.
Water and drainage
Surface runoff, roof discharge, subsurface water, and backfill conditions may be part of the investigation. Stabilizing a wall does not automatically change the water path outside it.

Evidence to gather before discussing a fix.
A useful record separates the observed condition from the explanation that still needs to be tested.

Identify the wall assembly
Record whether the wall is poured concrete, concrete masonry, stone, brick, or a mixed assembly. Note coatings, finishes, prior reinforcement, and areas that cannot be seen.

Map the movement
Measure the wall against a documented reference and mark the location and direction of displacement. A repeatable baseline makes later movement easier to detect.

Map cracks and deterioration
Record horizontal, stair-step, diagonal, and vertical cracks along with open joints, spalling, loose masonry, water staining, and earlier patches.

Check the load path
Document the footing, floor edge, framing direction, sill area, and connections that restrain the top and bottom of the wall. Hidden or damaged connections belong in the uncertainty record.

Investigate the exterior
Review grading, roof discharge, drainage, utilities, property limits, decks, porches, and other access constraints. These facts affect both cause assessment and system layout.

Define the intended outcome
Ask the proposal to distinguish stabilization from attempted straightening and replacement. It should name design responsibility, required approvals, monitoring, exclusions, and the written warranty.
Stabilization discussion
The system has to complete a load path.
Interior braces, wall anchors, bonded reinforcement, and other systems rely on different connections and site conditions. The generic method name is not enough. The project record should show where the wall load goes and which existing materials receive it.
Correction or replacement
A more ambitious outcome needs its own scope.
Attempting to move a wall toward plumb is different from holding its current position. Severe displacement, deterioration, failed connections, or an unsuitable wall assembly may change the discussion to partial or full replacement.
Safety boundary
Leave the area when collapse appears possible.
Sudden movement, falling masonry, a visibly unstable wall, or damaged gas or electrical service is not a web-diagnosis problem. Keep people away, leave the building when it appears at risk of collapse, and contact emergency services or the appropriate building professional. FEMA's cited checklist is earthquake guidance, so it supports this emergency route rather than classifying ordinary residential cracks.
