What does a sagging floor establish?
A sagging, sloped, or springy floor establishes a change in elevation or stiffness. It does not, by itself, identify whether the cause is the finish, joists, a beam, a post or footing, moisture damage, an alteration, or foundation movement.
Floor surface
Map where the floor is low, sloped, springy, or soft. Record whether the condition is localized or crosses rooms, and separate finish or subfloor irregularity from movement in the framing below.
Framing
Inspect visible joists, beams, bearing points, connections, cuts, holes, added loads, and earlier alterations. Deflection can have more than one contributor.
Support
Trace beams to posts, posts to footings, and exterior framing to the foundation. A new post does not correct an inadequate footing or a moving foundation.
Moisture
Record staining, active leaks, condensation, decay, insect damage, soil moisture, and ventilation conditions. Moisture control and structural repair may both be needed, but they are not the same scope.

The floor surface is the symptom. The useful record connects it to the framing, support, foundation, and moisture conditions below.

Map elevation and movement
Record the rooms and direction of slope, localized dips, bounce, soft areas, cracked finishes, sticking openings, and whether the condition has changed. Use repeatable reference points rather than an impression alone.

Separate layers of the floor
Determine whether the visible condition is limited to a finish or subfloor, follows one joist bay, spans a beam line, or extends toward a wall or foundation. Hidden assemblies may require further investigation.

Inspect framing and alterations
Document joist and beam spans, bearing, connections, notches, holes, splits, reinforcement, removed walls or posts, added loads, and earlier repairs. Each case needs its own diagnosis.

Follow support to the ground
Trace beams to columns or posts, then to footings or soil. Record corrosion, crushing, looseness, missing bearing, settlement, and any foundation distress along the load path.

Trace moisture separately
Locate roof, plumbing, groundwater, condensation, and drainage sources where possible. Record decay, insect activity, and material loss without assuming that drying alone restores structural capacity.

Define the intended outcome
Require the proposal to state what will be stabilized or replaced, whether any lift is intended, what movement or finish damage could occur, and which engineering, permits, temporary support, monitoring, and warranty records are included.
Stabilize or reinforce
New support should connect to a verified load path.
Posts, beams, joist reinforcement, and connection repairs can improve support only when the members, bearing points, and footing below fit the design. A product name is not a substitute for those checks.
Lift or replace
Level is a separate outcome from structural stability.
A controlled lift may affect partitions, finishes, doors, plumbing, and other connected work. Damaged wood or failed connections may need replacement even when the floor can be supported in place.
Safety boundary
Restrict access when support appears unstable.
Sudden movement, a soft or failing floor, a displaced post, falling material, or damaged gas or electrical service needs immediate safety action. Leave the affected area when collapse appears possible and contact emergency services or the appropriate building professional.
